NERC commends “Accelerating Decarbonization”
NERC commends the recent report by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) titled “Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions (2023).” The report examines the status of technologies, policies, and societal factors needed for decarbonization and recommends that research and policy should support this transformation, with a focus on the near and midterm (5–20 years) timeframe.
The report underscores the importance of resource dispatchability, primarily relying on natural gas and other fossil fuel-fired generation for the next decade and likely beyond. It also highlights the necessity of expanding the high-voltage interstate transmission grid to transport energy over long distances to areas with energy deficiencies. This expansion should be accompanied by the modernization of local electricity distribution systems, the deployment of energy resources (like solar and storage) near customers, and a more aggressive adoption of energy efficiency programs. NERC believes that natural gas generation will remain vital during this transition to support the electric energy infrastructure’s readiness for decarbonization and the decarbonization of other sectors.
