President Biden’s plan allocates $50 million for projects focusing on enhancing water and energy efficiency within America.
Department of the Interior revealed the availability of up to $50 million to support water conservation and efficiency initiatives, aligning with President Biden’s broader Investing in America agenda. This funding, sourced from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will notably bolster the Bureau of Reclamation’s Water and Energy Efficiency Grants Program.
These grants aim to finance projects that yield measurable water savings, integrate renewable energy aspects, and foster overall resilience and sustainability. The projects will strategically conserve and optimize water usage, amplify renewable energy production, diminish conflict risks in high-water-risk areas, and generate additional sustainability benefits.
This announcement coincides with the release of the Fifth National Climate Assessment, an annual report evaluating climate change science, impacts, and risk reduction options. It’s part of the Bureau of Reclamation’s allocation of $100 million this week for water infrastructure enhancements geared towards fortifying drought resilience in the Western region.
Secretary Deb Haaland emphasized, “Amidst severe drought conditions in the West, our department is leveraging every resource available, including substantial investments from President Biden’s agenda, to fortify communities against drought and climate shifts for the long haul. Today’s funding announcement signifies our commitment to pioneering solutions for water conservation and climate resilience.”

The impact of drought in the West spans various sectors like agriculture, urban areas, Tribal communities, the environment, recreation, and hydropower production. Reclamation’s WaterSMART program provides financial backing for projects aimed at efficient water use and fostering sustainability across the region.
President Biden’s Investing in America initiative marks a monumental investment in national climate resilience, specifically catering to fortifying Western communities against drought and climate change. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Reclamation is channeling $8.3 billion over five years into water infrastructure projects targeting system repairs, dam security, rural water initiatives, ecological conservation, and fulfillment of Indian Water Rights Settlements.
This funding opportunity spans two years, with the initial application window closing in February 2024. For detailed information on this grant, applicants can visit Grants.gov. The allocation for water and energy efficiency builds upon previously announced funding as part of the $140 million designated for Water and Energy Efficiency grants in 2023.
