ERCOT cancels program to boost power reserves ahead of potentially precarious winter
ERCOT called off its effort to increase power reserves ahead of a potentially precarious winter for Texas’ electric grid. This decision followed the absence of energy companies volunteering to restart their inactive plants. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas aimed to secure additional electricity generation, equivalent to powering about 600,000 homes, to bolster reserves due to a forecast indicating a nearly 20% chance of facing emergency conditions this winter.

Despite this forecast, the program was scrapped when offers for additional power reserves only amounted to enough for 2,200 homes. Notably, all these offers came from companies willing to reduce electricity usage during emergencies rather than increasing generation.
Expressing disappointment, ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas mentioned in an interview, “It was disappointing that there wasn’t more available in the procurement. We’re going to really take the learning to focus on what we can do to improve down the road.”
