Mitsubishi battery spinoff contracted for 328 MWh storage system in Idaho

Prevalon Energy, part of Mitsubishi Power Americas, has revealed a new agreement with Idaho Power for a comprehensive Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a long-term service commitment.

The objective of this project is to enhance grid resilience as a solution for peak demand, aiding Idaho Power in meeting energy needs during high-demand periods. The service agreement encompasses maintenance and remote monitoring services.

The BESS project, featuring a four-hour battery storage capacity of up to 328 MWh from Prevalon, is in line with Idaho Power’s strategy to incorporate more than 5,000 MW of renewable energy from wind and solar projects over the next two decades. This BESS will enable the storage of energy generated by these intermittent sources for future use, according to Prevalon Energy.

Prevalon’s “Prevalon Battery Energy Storage Platform” will serve as the foundation for this utility’s battery storage initiative, offering a complete AC solution comprising battery enclosures, inverters, medium voltage transformers, and an EMS (Energy Management System). The project is slated for full operation by 2025.

Tom Cornell, President and CEO of Prevalon, emphasized, “This order underscores the dedication of our highly skilled team, positioning Prevalon as a reliable and experienced partner for our clients, especially in the rapidly evolving field of battery energy storage. We are committed to collaboration and are eager to collaborate closely with Idaho Power to integrate our comprehensive battery energy storage solution into their long-term strategies, ensuring a resilient and dependable energy grid for their customers.”

Earlier, in February, Mitsubishi Power announced the rebranding of its BESS division into a separate entity named Prevalon. Leveraging over 30 projects and three-gigawatt hours (GWh) of deployed utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) globally, Prevalon aims to operate with the agility characteristic of a startup.
