Calpine to launch first battery energy storage project at 680-MW California BESS site in 2024
Calpine Corporation, a US-based power producer, is on track to complete the initial three phases of its 680-MW battery energy storage project in Menifee, California, by summer 2024, and will unveil the full facility in 2025.
The Nova Power Bank battery energy storage system (BESS) will be capable of storing 510 MW by this summer, as announced by Calpine on Thursday. The company’s plan includes finishing the 110-MW fourth phase in autumn and completing the project with the remaining 60 MW in phase five by 2025.

Covering 43 acres (17.4 ha) of land, Nova Power Bank’s batteries will be located on the site of a former natural gas-fired power plant. Once operational, the BESS will provide energy storage and discharge services for utilities such as Southern California Edison, Peninsula Clean Energy, and San Diego Gas & Electric. Furthermore, according to Calpine, these services will enhance grid reliability and efficiency.
To fund the project, Calpine secured over USD 1 billion (EUR 926.3m) in debt financing. Moreover, in addition to Nova Power Bank, the company has over 2,000 MW of battery storage projects in various stages of development across California.
