FREE RESEARCH PAPER: Fortinet’s Push Into Grid Security
What It Means for Investors and Utility CISOs: Five Findings from Our 61-Page Fortinet (FTNT) Vendor Assessment
Fortinet, the volume leader in security appliances, has reaccelerated sharply in 2026, and operational technology (OT) is its fastest-growing segment.
For utilities and independent power producers, that makes Fortinet a serious contender for substation, plant and renewable-site security. For investors, it raises the question of how much of the growth will last.
This free 2-page research paper summarizes what we found.
What You’ll Learn
Growth has reaccelerated, led by product sales
Q2 2026 revenue rose 26 percent and billings 33 percent. Product revenue grew 52 percent while service revenue grew 14 percent, so durability after the firewall refresh is the key question for 2027.
OT is the fastest-growing segment
OT billings grew more than 70 percent in Q1 and more than 55 percent in Q2 2026, and GO-IBR estimates annual OT billings are in the high hundreds of millions of dollars.
Custom silicon is the moat
Fortinet leads in units shipped but ranks third by firewall revenue. It wins where site counts are high and budgets per site are low: substations, pumping stations and renewable plants.
Trust is the main OT caution
Fortinet has 32 entries in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, 17 added since January 2025. Under NERC CIP-015-2, firewalls themselves become monitored assets from 2029.
Innovation intensity trails platform peers
R&D is 12 percent of revenue against 22 to 27 percent at Palo Alto Networks and Zscaler.
